Ingredient notes

  • Brownies: Of course, you can make homemade brownies from scratch to cube and layer them into this dish, but I love to save time with the semi-homemade route. No one will notice you started with boxed brownie mix, promise!
  • Sweetened condensed milk: Combining this with the boxed chocolate pudding mix makes its consistency remarkably silky and rich.
  • Whipped topping: Cool Whip is a Midwestern staple, although any brand will do. Or, substitute an equal amount of whipped cream.
  • Oreo cookies: When making the crushed Oreos, tread lightly with a food processor or blender (unless you want Oreo dust). I usually add the cookies to a plastic bag and smash them with a rolling pin to crush them without obliterating them.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease the bottom of a 9-inch by 9-inch pan. In a large bowl, add brownie mix, eggs, oil, and water and mix with an electric mixer or stir by hand. Pour into greased pan.

  1. In a large bowl, combine the pudding mix, vanilla, water, and sweetened condensed milk. Whisk until smooth, then fold in 8 ounces of whipped topping. Fold until no streaks remain.

Recipe tips and variations

  • Yield: This chocolate dessert makes 12 generous servings.
  • Storage: Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Make ahead: The trifle can be assembled one day ahead.
  • Mix and match: Love the concept of a trifle but want to mix things up? Trade the brownies for Blondies or try vanilla pudding in place of the chocolate pudding. I’ve secretly always wanted to add peanut butter to this dessert, too. Use mint Oreos for a minty-fresh version. For a heartier topping, make a cream cheese mixture with whipped topping and softened cream cheese. It’s a little bit like cheesecake!
  • Make them mini: Individual servings of Oreo brownie trifle are ideal for parties and showers, bake sales, or food gifts. The number of servings depends on the size of the vessel you choose. We used a 5-ounce square dessert cup (Culinary Hill may earn a small commission if you purchase through this link).

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a trifle be made the night before?

For this Oreo version, you can assemble it the night before. The cookies themselves may soften, but everything else holds up pretty well.

Does trifle have to have jelly?

As far as I’m concerned, any dessert made in a Trifle Dish is a Trifle, jelly or not.

  1. How would you add the cream cheese to the whipped cream? That sounds delicious! Do you have a recipe for that by chance? It would be so, so helpful! Thank you!!!

    1. Hi Aubrey, I beat some softened cream cheese and fold in the remaining whipped topping. I don’t have an exact measurement on hand, but I’ll add it to my list to obtain a measurement. Sorry about that! – Meggan

    1. Hi Barry, most trifle dishes are about 15 cups in volume, about 120 ounces. Hope this helps! – Meggan

  2. Was wondering if we add the pudding mix in dry or if we make it as directed on the box and then add the condensed milk, vanilla, and cool whip?

    1. Hi Meagan, thanks for your question! The pudding mix is added in dry in step 3. Sorry for the confusion! – Meggan

  3. The recipe was delicious, but I had to use a few alternatives as it’s not easy to access some of the ingredients in Australia.
I used thickened cream instead of cool whip, and I whipped this up. That worked really well. I had to make my own instant chocolate powder. I put the powder and condensed milk on the stove to heat and thicken sauce, and added a little real dark chocolate to it as well.
I will make it again, but I will use homemade chcolate mousse rather than the pudding. The sauce made the trifle too rich for us. I think the mousse would really add to the flavour.

    1. Thanks for sharing, Rebecca! I’m glad you were able to make the substitutions! – Meggan

  4. I made this for our sonโ€™s rehearsal dinner and it was a huge hit! I will definitely make this again and have passed on the recipe to several people already.
Definitely a win for all chocolate loverโ€™s.

    1. Thank you so much, Carol! I love to hear that you’ve shared it with your loved ones ๐Ÿ™‚ – Meggan
